Job Summary: The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules Other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Certification in RWIC On-Track Worker and Operating Rules Construction reporting Experience with railroad track construction maintenance and writing report Able to document items of non-compliance Able to complete required physical demands and/or task Know how to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected Know the procedure and be proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EIC’s (Employee in Charge) and assigned work group Proficient in performing a job briefing with all the roadway workers within their work location Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.
e.
, Microsoft Office Suite) Required Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) A minimum of 2 years of direct railroad experience; preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department as a RWIC Preferred Education and Experience: 2 - 5 years of railroad track maintenance experience Prior experience working within a railway company Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.
