The Electronics and Sensors Division (ESD) is a world-class engineering and scientific leader in electronics and remote sensing systems.
The Digital and Integrated Circuit Electronics Department (DICED) resides within ESD and supports the design, modeling, simulation, verification, analysis, and test for microelectronics and digital electronic boards, boxes, subsystems, and systems for civil, commercial, and national space systems.
Our expertise in digital electronics, combined with sophisticated in-house laboratories, rapid prototyping, industry-standard modeling and simulation capabilities, enables DICED to deliver innovative solutions to national space systems and civil customers.
This is a Hybrid Position based in El Segundo, California and will work remotely and on-site.
What You’ll Be Doing As a Digital Design Engineer, you will work with our circuit design team and support our customers to optimize the design and development of digital and mixed-signal circuits and systems.
Tasks will include design, analysis, modeling, simulation, and characterization of high-speed digital and mixed-signal circuits.
Perform requirements development, electrical design, system integration, verification & validation, and risk assessments for space electronic systems Assess space flight worthiness of board/unit designs Develop and execute analysis and test plans to validate signal and interface integrity Leverage the use of state-of-the-art high-speed digital and microelectronic technology and design best practices Perform Worst Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA) and Assessment of Critical Timing Relationships (WCTA) on Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) or Printed-Wired Board (PWB) designs Lead technical failure root cause investigations and identify appropriate mitigations Work directly with Program Office customers as the digital electronics expert, assessing program designs and providing detailed analyses, results, risks, and mitigations Provide written reports on electronic design project status and results Brief customers and management on project status/results, and provide written end of week reports Work closely with technicians to characterize or test hardware in lab environment Mentor other engineers Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed This role can be filled as a Digital Design Engineer (Engineering Specialist or Senior Engineering Specialist).
What You Need to be Successful Minimum Requirements for Digital Design Engineer – Engineering Specialist: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in electrical engineering or another related field Eight or more years of relevant working experience with space digital and microelectronic hardware design, development, test, and verification Experience with the full design and development cycle and best practices of space flight high-speed digital and mixed-signal systems: from concept and requirements definition to assembly, testing, and integration of digital and mixed-signal electronic systems, as well as on-orbit operation at board/unit/sub-system/system level Solid background on transmission line theory and knowledge of electromagnetics, PCB layout, and package layout techniques Familiarity with signal integrity and circuit simulation and analysis tools such as Hyperlynx and PSPICE Ability to trouble and investigate hardware anomalies and failures.
Perform root-cause analysis and provide resolution and recommendations Experience with space qualification of electrical components Experience with lab measurements using oscilloscopes, TDRs, VNAs, and spectrum analyzers Understanding of standard digital circuit interface operation (CMOS, RS-422, LVDS, and ASIC/FPGA).
Self-motivated, teamwork, and good communication skills Demonstrated ability to lead small teams in the design, development, test, and verification of digital and microelectronic hardware Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, concurrent design and analysis projects Experience with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of digital and mixed-signal circuits and subsystems Ability to mentor staff in digital electronics Ability to document projects in technical reports, presentations/briefs, and report findings to the customer and Aerospace management Ability and willingness to work on-site as necessary for in-person lab or classified work Willing to travel domestically up to 25% Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance that is issued by the U.
