Summary: The shift lead assists the management team in maintaining a hospitable environment that provides efficient and friendly service and helps to ensure a quality experience for our guests, as well as our employees.
Shift leads assist in training new staff, advocating for and assisting in employee development, delivering product knowledge to guests and staff, encouraging safe work practices, and demonstrating a commitment to upholding hospitality and Alfred employee expectations.
This position helps support and guide team members on the floor and serves as the manager on duty in the absence of the cafe and/or assistant manager.
In addition to fulfilling the normal responsibilities of a barista, shift leads help to ensure daily operating tasks are completed in a timely manner, assist in opening and closing duties, and are accountable for reconciliation of the POS and cash handling.
Shift leads help to ensure overall adherence to Alfred company standards in the areas of beverage preparation, quality control, store cleanliness, organization, and their relation to company core values.
The shift lead serves as a role model and resource for all baristas, and must be able to effectively problem solve and make important business decisions in the absence of the Assistant Manager and Café Manager.
Responsibilities: Maintains and upholds all service expectations within a barista role and leads by example.
Provides effective leadership during a shift to ensure that excellent cafe operations are consistently achieved.
Ability to think on their feet and problem solve in the event of any work-related obstacles.
Contributes to a team-oriented environment by recognizing employee accomplishments.
Provides support for inventory and order placement.
Provides exemplary customer service and serves as an on-the-job role model for exceptional hospitality.
Ensures that all staff clock in and out at the beginning and end of shift, as well as for any breaks lasting longer than 10 minutes.
Assists with new employee training via camera-check feedback, positive reinforcement, and providing detailed feedback to the management team.
Properly handles all cash drawer and tip procedures for both opening and closing shifts.
Understands and is able to explain to customers the various beverages, products, food items, and services of the cafe, and ensures staff does as well.
Process information and merchandise through the POS register system.
Helps ensure that employees prepare food and beverages to Alfred standards for quality, consistency, and timeliness.
Help build baristas’ knowledge of coffee and tea flavors, blends, and origins.
Proficiency on bar and ability to assist baristas with dialing in, proper steaming techniques, and other drink building procedures.
Helps to maintain a clean, organized, and stocked cafe environment to ensure smooth daily operations and proper setup and breakdown of cafe.
Checks refrigerator temperatures throughout the day, each day, in an effort to maintain that company and Los Angeles County Department of Environmental Health standards are upheld.
Helps enforce proper safety and sanitation procedures, and completes HACCP in a timely manner.
Assists in receiving and handling product deliveries.
Anticipates customer and cafe needs through careful evaluation of environment and customer cues.
Helps maintain a supportive and accessible work environment for employees and guests.
Works together with Coffee Program Trainer to develop and support new baristas.
Maintains excellent and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Answers all customer questions, concerns, and complaints professionally to ensure Alfred Hospitality standards.
Properly documents any employee or customer injuries that take place in the café through the use of Incident Reports, and communicates to the management team.
Completes the AM/PM Daily Cafe Log and utilizes additional channels of communication, such as Slack and email.
Delegates staff to particular stations (barista, register, expo, handoff, swing) and runs the shift to ensure maximum operational workflow.
Develops inclusive rapport with employees through a keen understanding of individual motivation, needs, and concerns.
Follow the Disciplinary Flowchart to issue verbal and written warnings to staff when warranted.
Helps the management team in assessing staffing needs based on business flow, sending employees home, or calling for additional staff as needed.
Delegates duties and responsibilities, assigning specific tasks and ensuring team members complete all specified tasks in a timely manner.
What You’ll Need: Regularly required to stand, walk, and listen to customers and co-workers.
Regularly required to lift and/or move items up to 30 pounds.
Regularly required to handle food and hot beverages.
Possess a valid California food handler’s card.
Minimum one year of retail or specialty coffee experience.
Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Successfully completes all Alfred training and Espresso/Milk courses.
Works with a team-oriented approach driven by solutions.
Work a varied schedule based on business needs.

Employees are responsible for understanding and adhering to the attendance requirements, including the requirement that all employees are in uniform and ready to work at the start of their shift.
Employees who are unable to attend work or who are delayed arriving at work must personally notify their direct supervisor as soon as possible, no less than two (2) hours before their shift (and also text their co-workers if possible to inform them that they will be late), but under no circumstances any later than the scheduled start time.
Employees are also responsible for finding their own coverage for a missed shift, unless otherwise prohibited, and generally cannot request another employee cover their shift if it would result in an overtime payment.
In addition, employees who are unable to reach the Manager on Duty must leave a voicemail message, text message or email concerning the delay or intended absence.
It is not acceptable to call a fellow employee who is not a member of management.
Employees who fail to notify their Supervisor in a timely manner may be subject to disciplinary action.
Job Abandonment Employees who fail to personally notify their Supervisor of their absence for two (2) scheduled workdays, may be terminated for job abandonment.
Job abandonment is considered a voluntary resignation.
In addition, if an employee misses more than three (3) days due to an illness, the company may require a physician’s certification to return to work.
