For nearly 50 years, Bet Tzedek Legal Services has provided high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents.
What started out as a volunteer-led organization is now a mid-size legal services non-profit with a significant portfolio of private and public grants, each of which carries compliance requirements.
Bet Tzedek seeks a Vice President of Grant Implementation and Compliance to work in close collaboration with the President & CEO, the Vice President of Legal Programs, the directors of Institutional Giving and Data, Information & Technology, and other members of Bet Tzedek’s senior leadership and management team to manage all efforts related to the successful implementation of all secured grants and public funding.
In doing so, the individual in this position will serve as a key bridge between Bet Tzedek’s Senior Leadership, Institutional Giving, Finance, and Legal departments, helping ensure that each of these teams are in alignment and have everything necessary in place to successfully comply with and meet the requirements of secured grants.
This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid/remote workplace designation.
While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek’s offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload/business obligation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: As partner to the Vice President of Legal Programs and Director of Institutional Giving, serve as a bridge between the Institutional Giving team and legal programs to help evaluate prospective funding opportunities and provide an opinion on the agency’s ability to comply with grant requirements.
Collaborate with the Institutional Giving team staff, Directing Attorneys, and legal department staff to plan for and address compliance requirements in grant proposals.
Review all grant-related contracts and MOUs issued by Bet Tzedek funders, negotiate and address any issues with contracts and MOUs issued by funders, and facilitate the signing of grant-related contracts and MOUs.
Once funds are awarded, lead Grant Summary Meetings to review contracts and MOUs as well as grant requirements, and ensure all relevant departments are aware of grant requirements, deliverables, and compliance issues.
Work with all relevant departments to ensure all necessary practices, procedures, documentation, and tools are in place in order to successfully meet grant deliverables and comply with grant terms.
Collaborate with the Vice President of Legal Programs to produce and implement any necessary changes to program structure and service delivery designed to meet grant deliverables and to address compliance concerns.
Partner with Institutional Giving team staff to facilitate the timely and accurate completion and submission of all grant reports.
In collaboration with the Institutional Giving team, oversee the non-financial component of funder audits, including but not limited to the agency’s audits in relation to City and County of Los Angeles government grants as well as State Bar of California grants.
Serve as primary point of contact for any pro bono volunteers representing or assisting Bet Tzedek with compliance matters.
Regularly review and address compliance requirements related to grants.
Train Bet Tzedek staff on grants management and reporting requirements.
Train Bet Tzedek staff on compliance requirements, including but not limited to grant requirements, eligibility requirements, etc.
Oversee drafts and updates of all compliance policies, manuals, and materials.
Oversee Bet Tzedek’s liability, cybersecurity, and malpractice insurance coverage matters.
Other duties are assigned.
Requirements: Licensed to practice law in California (strongly preferred.
) Minimum of eight (8) years grants and/or contracts compliance experience (required.
) Experience handling government contracts compliance (strongly preferred.
) Experience working at a non-profit, specially a legal services non-profit (strongly preferred.
) Exceptional people skills, with heavy emphasis on high emotional intelligence (required); High aptitude for working collaboratively with colleagues and external partners in a fast-paced environment (required); Exceptional project management skills and proven track record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously (required); Understanding and commitment to Bet Tzedek’s mission of equal justice for all and Bet Tzedek’s core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation (required); and Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (required.
