org General Description: The Urban Peace Institute (UPI) is seeking a Smart Justice Training Coordinator.
This is a fast-paced position that requires initiative, project management, relationship building, coordination, facilitation and research and writing ability.
UPI’s Smart Justice Team partners with the County of Los Angeles, including the Department of Youth Development and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry offering trainings that support both youth and adult justice transformation.
Training platforms provide concrete skills, personal development opportunities and systemic social analyses to providers within the youth and adult diversion programs, as well as the credible messenger mentoring initiative.
We desire a highly motivated person who is committed to social justice and has the keen ability to organize and build relationships among a myriad of stakeholder groups, coordinate trainings and support the overall work of the Smart Justice team and UPI generally.
The Smart Justice Training Coordinator will also support UPI’s existing juvenile justice transformation efforts, inclusive of policy research and analysis, and engagement with the Los Angeles Youth Uprising coalition.
Position is local, requiring in person/in-field meeting with hybrid capability.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Training Development, Coordination and Logistics Coordinate and support the development of UPI’s Smart Justice Training Platforms, inclusive of youth diversion, adult law enforcement assisted diversion, and the credible messenger mentoring program In partnership with County Offices/Departments support the overall development of diversion and credible messenger programs as it relates to training implementation Build and help sustain collaborative relationships with a broad array of stakeholders including, LA County partners, community-based organizations (CBOs), community leaders, youth and other subject matter experts locally and nationally; Assist in training implementation including identifying subject matter experts, outreach, scheduling, logistics and development of training materials; Assist in the design of curriculum and lesson plans for training sessions, incorporating evidence based practices and learning strategies for diverse groups Facilitate conversations with/between stakeholders including service providers, credible messengers, and CBO leadership to support program and training refinement Support in the creation of budgets for training related expenses, including but not limited to honorariums, stipends, contracts, and other related expenditures; Develop resource guides synthesizing best practices, research, and relevant case studies that support training curriculum and can be shared with all participants Support in the development of a restorative/transformative justice training platform to be utilized across UPI departments Prepare administrative materials, agendas, and reports for meetings with collaborative partners Research/Policy Conduct research to strengthen UPI’s analysis on diversion, credible messengers, youth development and other juvenile justice system transformations including literature reviews of national best practices, program evaluations, and analysis of relevant data Track national, state, and local developments in policy related to diversion, credible messengers, youth development, alternative crisis response, community justice models and juvenile justice.
Engage in and support community mobilizations to advocate for youth justice policies in LA, particularly at the LA County Board of Supervisors UPI General Participate and represent UPI in meetings and forums with community members, public officials, law enforcement, statewide coalitions, and other subject matter experts.
Work in alignment with other UPI projects to strengthen overall UPI mission for safe and healthy communities Work in alignment with organization-wide initiatives to strengthen overall organizational cohesion and collaboration Participate in agency wide planning, development and communication activities as needed and ensure adherence to agency wide goals and policies within the project area.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty with excellence.
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required: A bachelor’s degree is required, preferred in relevant field of study including public policy, criminology, sociology, political science, public health, and others; Ability to work effectively with diverse people across the spectrum of socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, and gender orientation; Strong analysis around intersectional social & racial justice issues and demonstrates a personal and professional commitment to advancing these goals Background in training, teaching within community and/or nonprofit settings is highly desired; Experience in coordinating and training/teaching adult learners in traditional and nontraditional settings is highly desired; Experience in curriculum design, particularly for adult-learners with an emphasis on incorporating social/emotional and creative practices into learning strategies is highly desired Experience in facilitating groups of diverse peoples with the goal of fostering inclusivity and understanding is desired Specific experience on Urban Peace issues and/or youth development, diversion, credible messenger mentoring is highly desired; Experience in project management and service delivery is highly desired; Experience in research and policy development is desired; Lived experience with the impacts of the criminal justice system and or previous experience working with justice impacted/involved communities is desired General understanding of power-building and movement strategies General understanding of the historical and contemporary harms of the criminal justice system, particularly the impacts on youth and young adults General background in community-based non-profit work, social work, or other related fields; Ability to multi-task under high pressure while remaining highly organized; Excellent written and oral communication skills (i.
e.
, grant and report writing, outreach, facilitation, and message delivery); Strong analytical abilities, self-starter, organized, and detail oriented; Ability to take on responsibilities independently and work as part of a team Strong internet research skills and very high computer proficiency; Strong interpersonal skills; Familiarity with various forms of social media.
Annual Salary and Benefits: $65,000-$75,000 DOE.
