About the Organization: This project aims to improve the health of nail salon workers and Black hair stylists and their clientele in California by promoting safer and more sustainable products and reducing levels of toxic chemical exposures.
The project represents an innovative collaboration between the UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program and two community-based organizations in Southern California—the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (CHNSC) and Black Women for Wellness (BWW)—to extend resources to underserved sectors of the nail and hair salon communities to promote adoption of safer products, pollution prevention, and overall environmental stewardship.
The proposed approach combines outreach and training, targeted technical assistance and environmental sampling, and pilot projects in both sectors to demonstrate the feasibility of nail and Black hair salons adopting safer and more sustainable products and tracking their use and impacts over time.
The approach leverages existing relationships and initiatives that CHNSC and BWW maintain within these sectors and builds on a history of collaboration between our three organizations.
