JOB DESCRIPTION The Director, Business and Legal Affairs will handle all assigned business and legal affairs activities across the development and production of MarVista’s growing slate of cost-effective, targeted programming.
This role will include the drafting and negotiation of MarVista deals related to development, production, talent, and production services agreements for 3rd parties, the supervision of outside counsel, and production management.
A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Handle the management of day-to-day production matters, including clearance matters, and liaise with third-party production counsel Negotiate and draft deals as assigned related to motion pictures, television, and digital, including talent and underlying rights, and deals with external production partners Support BALA leadership with drafting and in complex negotiations with MarVista creative and production-related business partners, including content owners, external production partners, agencies, talent, etc.
Act as primary researcher with regard to laws and industry-wide agreements that affect the Business and Legal Affairs function as well as maintain records of MarVista precedents, legal advice, and decisions and provide litigation support Draft and negotiate to final execution of production-related agreements Acts as subject matter expert in the requirements of, and relationships with, all the major entertainment guilds (WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, etc) Recommends best practices, including identifying the ideal agreement for each project, building effective compensation structures, optimizing tax credits, defining business models, etc.
Collaborate with Fox Labor Relations and Fox Entertainment BALA to engage with labor unions and with BALA leadership on strategic initiatives and new opportunities WHAT YOU WILL NEED Juris Doctor degree and member in good standing of the California bar 8+ years of experience as a practicing entertainment attorney at a law firm or in-house at a network or studio, with extensive industry relationships with agents, talent, networks, and producers Ability to perform in a high-volume environment, exercise independent judgment, efficiently manage production matters, and lead negotiations with agencies, talent, producers, and other industry partners Overall understanding of on-set production matters, television rights licensing agreements, high-level talent agreements relating to television development and production, guild/union and non-union labor and employment law issues relating to productions Possess extensive knowledge of the entertainment industry including high-level talent agreements relating to television / new media development and production, marketing, guild/union and non-union labor and employment law issues relating to movie and series productions; intellectual property law; risk management issues, rights of publicity/privacy issues as well as an understanding of on-set production Possess excellent negotiating, drafting, analytical, interpersonal, organizational, prioritizing, and time management skills Self-starter with the ability to navigate and partner with internal and external stakeholders and executives; understanding the big picture and business as a whole Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; demonstrating good judgment NICE TO HAVE BUT NOT A DEALBREAKER Series experience COMPETENCIES Entrepreneurship: Resilient and forward-thinking when faced with changing priorities and unforeseen challenges.
